HONG KONG, Jan. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Eating well, staying physically active and keeping socially engaged throughout life offers many benefits especially as we grow older. With the New Year providing opportunities for a fresh start, The Kinnet is pleased to share its top 10 wellness resolutions to help older adults achieve their goals of a healthy, active lifestyle.

The centre's healthy living tips are being offered at a time when a fundamental shift is taking place in the composition of the territory's population with the Census and Statistics Department forecasting that in 25 years, the number of Hong Kong residents aged 65 or above will double to 2.6 million, a demographic that is expected to make up a third of the population by 2041.

With the median age in Hong Kong predicted to climb to 52 by 2041 versus 43 at present, The Kinnet whose mandate is to bring together services and amenities to improve the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of mature-aged citizens, offers the following tips with a view to encouraging older adults in the community to live healthier, active and more productive lives.

1. Find meaning and joy in life

Healthy ageing is about continuing to find meaning and joy in life. As one ages, there are many changes throughout, especially in the latter years. It is important to reinvent yourself, find your purpose, and be able to enjoy the process and adventures that come with it.

2. Stay physically active

If you wish to remain healthy well into your later years, exercise is a must. Exercise can help maintain muscle mass and flexibility and keep you feeling young. We recommend finding an activity which you like that motivates you. For those new to exercise, start slow, focus on what you are physically capable of and then gradually build up.

3. Keep your mind sharp

It is vital that you keep challenging your brain so that it is learning something new or different all the time. Starting a new interest is a great way to continue to learn. Enjoyable leisure activities provide social interactions that can enhance wellbeing, while keeping your mind sharp and alert.

4. Be socially engaged

Social isolation often brings unhappiness, loneliness and depression. Maintaining active connections with family, friends and the community is critical for good mental and physical health.  In turn, this can lead to feelings of increased happiness, contentment and self-worth.

5. Eat well

Eating well plays a significant role in warding off chronic diseases common in older adults like heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and even some cancers. A balanced diet with a healthy amount of fruit and vegetables is not only essential, but serves as the cornerstone of good health.

6. Maintain a healthy weight

Extra weight increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure that statistics from the Centre for Health Protection suggests affects about one in every six persons in Hong Kong. Stay in shape by learning your ideal weight - then stick to it - through exercising regularly and eating well.

7. Stay motivated by asking for assistance

Everyone needs a little help to stay motivated. To keep yourself on track, find a friend who is willing to take classes with you. Alternatively, identify a coach, personal trainer or dietitian who can help you reach your goals.

8. Volunteer to help others

Those entering their golden years have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience. Upon entering the second phase of their lives, it can be rewarding for older adults to give back to the community. Consider volunteering that benefits both you and society-at-large.

9. Manage stress levels

People in Hong Kong have extremely high levels of stress throughout their working years so it is imperative to relax and slow down after retirement. Try exercise or relaxation techniques such as meditation, tai chi or yoga for improved wellness and overall better health.

10. Have a positive outlook

The way you feel about yourself affects the way you will age. Having an optimistic outlook on life is strong medicine for the mind and body. A positive mental attitude benefits wellbeing, longevity and quality of life so you stay healthy and feeling your best regardless of your age.

"Healthy ageing is not only about living longer but enjoying a higher quality of life," says Ms. Stephanie Tan, Executive Director of The Kinnet. "When we take responsibility for our own health and wellness, ageing can be transformed into a time of opportunity where we can continue to live life to the fullest.

"It is never too late to make a change that can improve your health," continues Ms. Tan. "Remaining healthy, active and involved are important components  of  successful ageing. A positive attitude will also help you to live longer and live well."
