Although government and international associations have worked to improve water distribution and production in Vietnam, serious water shortages are still a problem and have been compounded by heavy drought. Water scarcity is a destabilising force because it affects many different sectors of the economy - especially agriculture, where 70% of consumption is used for crop irrigation. The Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment recently reported that Vietnam has plentiful reserves of surface water - about 255 billion cubic metres per year. But although water utilisation only accounts for 53 billion cubic metres per year, much of it is polluted resulting in serious shortages in many areas.

Another problem facing Vietnam is a lack of equipment, exacerbated in turn by low human and financial resources.  This underscores the urgent need for the optimum utilisation of water and the pressing need to overcome shortages and sustainability issues.

"We wish the development and completeness of water system of Vietnam towards the industrialization and modernization will be more accelerated under the collaboration of the governments and companies from our both countries," said Mr. Hideo Suzuki, Minister, Embassy of Japan in Vietnam in his speech during the opening ceremony of VIETWATER 2012.

VIETWATER 2012 is being held at the perfect time and will enable industry professionals, decision makers and consumers to join together and identify solutions to these challenges. The demand for answers and equipment is at an all-time high due to Vietnam's rapid economic and social development.

Good tools are a prerequisite for any successful job and this is why modern technology, effective management and professionalism are urgently needed in the Vietnamese water industry today.  The 2012 event will feature over 298 exhibitors from 28 countries, and National Pavilions from France, Denmark, Malaysia, mainland China, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore & Japan.
