Winland Ocean Shipping Corp. Comments on the Recent Baltic Dry Index Fluctuations

2011-12-22 21:19 1423

HONG KONG, December 22, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia-FirstCall/ -- Winland Ocean Shipping Corp. (WLOL.OB) a global shipping company, today comments on the recent Baltic Dry Index fluctuations and the connections between the index and shipping company performances.

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is a number issued daily by the London-based Baltic Exchange. Not restricted to Baltic Sea countries, the index tracks worldwide international shipping prices of various dry bulk cargoes. The index provides "an assessment of the price of moving the major raw materials by sea. Taking in 26 shipping routes measured on a time charter and voyage basis, the index covers Handymax, Supramax, Panamax, and Capesize dry bulk carriers carrying a range of commodities including coal, iron ore and grain" according to The Baltic Exchange.

"Generally speaking, there are tight connections between the BDI and the shipping company performances," Ms. Xue Ying, CEO, said. "In May 20, 2008, the BDI reached a record of 11,793 points and a yearly average of 6,390, at the same year, the company achieved 85 million in revenue and 19 million in net income. But the BDI dropped sharply in the following few years due to the Global Economic Crisis, the average BDI was 2,619 in year 2009 and 2,757 in year 2010, which is half of that in 2008. The average BDI in the first 11 months of 2011 was only 1,521, almost the lowest number in recent ten years, in the meanwhile, we see many shipping companies in deep red, but we stayed profitable in fiscal year 2010 and the resent quarters." Added Ms. Xue Ying, "Although we cannot predict when the down cycle will turn, we believe the industry is on the way of recovering, just as every cyclical industry will, and we are in position to ride with the next wave."
