Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, which is June 14 this year. It commemorates the death of a famous Chinese poet called Qu Yuan, who is said to have drowned himself in a river to protest government corruption. Villagers threw rice dumplings into the river as food to prevent fish from eating his body.
