LONDON, Nov. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Russian Internet (RuNet) economy continues to stand out against the backdrop of the country's natural resource-based economy. In fact, the growth and innovation potential especially of domestic Internet companies lets the Russian Internet remain a growth hotspot in the overall economy.

Recent analysis from Frost & Sullivan, The Russian Internet Landscape, highlights a number of specifics that set the RuNet apart from the global Internet landscape—notably dominance of domestic players and remaining growth potential before reaching the adoption levels of developed markets. It is expected that over the next 5-7 years the Russian Internet user base could increase by up to another third in comparison with the current level.

"Despite an increasingly challenging macroeconomic and political environment, the Russian Internet economy has maintained high momentum," said Frost & Sullivan Information & Communication Technologies Lead Consultant Martin Hoff ter Heide. "These circumstances and increasing regulation of the Russian Internet are among the key reasons that make that a somewhat more moderate development scenario is likely to play out going forward. Still, the Russian Internet economy can be expected to sustain significantly more positive dynamics than the country's overall economy."

The Russian search engine, Yandex's, overtaking of the main national television station, Pervy Kanal, in terms of both audience and advertising revenues, has been a landmark event in the evolution of the RuNet over the last years. It illustrates the power shift in the wider Russian media landscape from offline to the Internet.

"Russia already has the largest Internet audience in Europe," stated Hoff ter Heide. "Nonetheless, there is still some room for the number of Internet users to increase in the country. This will continue to be a source of growth for the Russian Internet economy."

Domestic players dominate the Russian Internet. Even without the recent disenchantment of foreign investors with Russia, domestic players' understanding of the local language, culture and business environment specifics would keep these companies at an advantage and help them sustain their central roles in the Russian Internet economy for  years to come.
