HONG KONG and VIENNA, May 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels management is delighted to announce that The Hong Kong Club's Executive Chef, Stefan Leitner, has won the coveted "Golden Cloche" Award 2017. This is the highest culinary honour given to chefs working outside of their native Austria.
Organised by Der Gastronomy Club Wien and the Chamber of Commerce in Austria, the award was presented to Chef Leitner at a glamorous award ceremony in Vienna at the Parkhotel Schönbrunn. Past honorees include Heinz Reitbauer, a 2-star Michelin Chef, and Chef of the Century Eckart Witzigmann from the Gault Millau guide. Other world-renowned European Michelin-starred chefs Hans Haas and Dieter Koschina have been awarded this title in the past.
"I am pleased, honoured and humbled to accept this award and to join past recipients who I have long admired and respected from the start of my career," said Chef Leitner. "I believe that the best cuisine relies on the best products and simplicity, and this is the approach that has enabled me to win this award."
Chef Leitner started his career 18 years ago as an apprentice at a small countryside restaurant in Austria. He moved to Vienna in 2003 where he worked under the tutelage of top Michelin-starred chefs including Chef Reinhard Gerer, Chef Leonard Cernko and Chef Heinz Reitbauer, and later worked with the Ritz Carlton Group in Russia, the US and China. He joined The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels in 2013 as Executive Sous Chef at the Hong Kong Club and was promoted to Executive Chef in 2015.
"This is a great honour for Hong Kong as it showcases the diverse cuisine that we have in this city. It is a prestigious award and we are proud of the recognition it brings to Chef Leitner's work at The Hong Kong Club, where we employ an incredibly talented and innovative culinary team, offering the best of classic and contemporary cuisine to guests and visitors," said Hong Kong Club General Manager, Mr Olaf Born.
The Hong Kong Club was established in 1846 and is managed by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, owner and operator of The Peninsula Hotels.
