Inspiring New Approaches to Worldwide Sustainable Urban Development

HONG KONG, Sept. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Organised by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), the Sustainable Building 2013 Hong Kong Regional Conference (SB13 HK) will take place on 12-13 September 2013 (Thursday - Friday) at Crowne Plaza Hong Kong Kowloon East Hotel under the theme of "Urban Density & Sustainability". Regional and worldwide experts will gather at the conference to share and exchange knowledge, new ideas and perspectives on sustainable development in the process.

The SB13 HK Regional Conference is honoured to have Mr. WONG Kam-sing, JP, Secretary for the Environment, HKSAR Government, as the guest of honour and one of the renowned keynote speakers. His speech will provide a wealth of valuable perspectives on the importance of sustainability in urban development. A number of other renowned regional and international industry leaders will share their fruitful research and valuable points of view at the conference.

During the press conference today, the local keynote speakers at the conference, Dr. Guiyi LI, Director -- ZCB of Construction Industry Council, Prof. John NG, Director of the Hong Kong Green Building Council, and Ir Prof.Daniel CHAN, Hon & Adjunct Professor, School of Architecture, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, led an insightful discussion on green building techniques and how to promote the development of sustainable buildings in Hong Kong.

They stated that Green building technology, in particular on planning level, is vital for the advancement of any modern city. If implemented effectively in Hong Kong, we could improve our quality of life greatly and resolve various pollution issues significantly. While green building technology is widely applied on new building projects, it can also be used in the alteration and retrofitting of existing buildings, leading to the improvement of our city on a more holistic level. Furthermore, it is crucial that an equal amount of diligence and effort should be given to the development and practical use of green construction materials.

Key areas to be discussed at SB13 HK will include how urban density affects the life of the individual citizen and a city's overall economic growth; how careful planning coupled with social considerations will affect urban revitalisation, overall city planning and integrated design; the importance of government policies and visions; and the latest technological innovations and labelling standards.

On the first night of the conference, a dinner banquet will be held to provide recognition to the green building projects which have achieved BEAM Plus Provisional Platinum or Final Platinum ratings, for their outstanding dedication and achievement.
