TEL AVIV, Israel, Oct. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --

Top Israeli Wastewater Firm in the Leading Country for Water Technology Globally

Aquanos, the Israeli water-tech company spearheading energy efficient wastewater purification, won the Cleanvest Cup award for best innovative company at the 2015 Watec Israel conference.

The prestigious event, taking place from October 13-15, 2015 in Tel Aviv, has brought together technology companies of all stripes in the water technology and environmental control sectors. The grand prize is a sponsored trip to Beijing, China in January, 2016 to help Aquanos continue to grow and expand in the Asian market.

Aquanos' first-of-its-kind technology tackles two of the world's most pressing challenges: clean water and clean energy. Its microalgae-based system is capable of delivering high-grade effluent while using up to 90% less energy compared with conventional aerobic wastewater treatment plants. The Aquanos wastewater treatment plant produces biogas, making it a net-energy positive facility, and its algae can be harvested to produce valuable by-products such as fertilizers and bioplastics.

The conference is teeming with delegations from the Southwestern United States, eager to find solutions for their drought and inefficient use of their water supply. Israel recycles upwards of 80% of its water and wastewater and states like California are working to emulate this. Due to increased publicity from the award, Aquanos is seeing substantial interest in its technology from this region as a low-cost way to build wastewater treatment capacity to produce clean water for agricultural uses.

"Our novel approach represents a paradigm shift in the business model of wastewater treatment," remarked Udi Leshem, Aquanos founder and CEO.  "We are offering both developing and developed nations an opportunity to generate income from what is currently a costly and energy intensive process," he continued.

Founded in 2011 and completing four years of intensive R&D, Aquanos now has contracts to install its unique wastewater treatment systems across Africa, Asia, North America and Israel. In May, 2015, Aquanos was featured at a Global Entrepreneurs' event at the White House with President Obama. In December 2014, Aquanos was one of four winners in the Tel Aviv Challenge Cup, a competition organized by US-based accelerator 1776, covering 16 global cities in search of the world's most promising start-ups.

Aquanos International is part of Fortuna-Holdings B.V., a Netherlands based financial group that facilitates large-scale infrastructure transactions in the areas of Water Treatment, Energy Production and Transport.
