As the weather gets warmer, vegetables all over China swarm into large cities, while local vegetables have also come into the market. Prices of fresh vegetables in big cities began to decline -- eggplants went down to RMB4 per kilo, capsicums to RMB6 -- in general, vegetable prices have become lower than the week before.
Himfr's agriculture analyst reports that prices of various types of vegetables remain relatively stable, while beans, melons and mushrooms experienced small fluctuations in prices, and that prices of leaf vegetables have undergone a substantial decline. A few days ago the spinach was RMB6 per kilos but now it has further dropped from RMB5 to RMB4. Capsicum prices dropped from RMB8 dropped to about RMB7 per kilos, and prices for garlic, cucumber, and eggplant have also reduced. With the weather getting warmer, wholesale prices of vegetables decline as well as the retail price.
According to statistics, in March this year, the overall level of
non-staple food prices in rural areas declined more than 7.05% over the same period last year. Vegetable prices are falling sharpest, with a decline of 12.5% compared to same period last year. A research on nine types of vegetables shows that the prices of seven vegetables are falling, namely, cabbage, green onions, garlic, celery, potatoes, dry peppers and cucumbers, which prices drop by 0.9%-34.2%. Leek remained unchanged, and tomato price was up 3.81%.
According to himfr's analyst, as the temperature continues to rise, the supply of vegetables will increase, which is expected to push prices down further, especially for leaf vegetables.
