A Sky Full of Manmade Stars Shined Above Beijing Bird's Nest

In the evening of 11th May, online game players of Legend of Immortals (also meaning Changes of the Stars in Chinese, produced by Shanda Games) flied hundreds of starring kites up in the night sky, breaking the Guinness World's Records

On 11th May 2011, the large-scale public welfare event 'Together We Seek the Stars' was held at the Bird's Nest national stadium in Beijing. The event was initiated by the Legend of Immortal (also meaning Changes of the Stars in Chinese) Project Group of Shanda Games Limited, together with Beijing University Environment Union (BUEU). Hundreds of online game players and university students in Beijing gathered and flew starry kites during the night, calling attention to environment protection, and at the same time breaking the Guinness World Records for the number of star kites being flown at one time. Hundreds of kites were flown, while volunteers wore theme T-shirts of 'Save the Earth, Stars are Changing', becoming the most attractive scenery of the night.

The large-scale public welfare event 'Together We Seek the Stars' was initiated by the Legend of Immortal (also meaning Changes of the Stars in Chinese) Project Group of Shanda Games Limited, together with Beijing University Environment Union (BUEU).

BUEU is a famous and influential organization of environment protection. It was first initiated by Beijing University. Environment related colleges from Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, China Agricultural University and Beijing Forestry University also successively joined in to form this large-scale communication platform.

Being one of the most influential public welfare events, 'Together We Seek the Stars' also broke the Guinness World's Record for the number of star kites being flown at one time. According to the organizers, this event is just the first step of their environmental protection activities. More star kite flying activities will be held in major cities of China.

According to the person in charge of BUEU, they hope to take this opportunity to evoke old memories of Beijing citizens of how beautiful the stars were. "As the environment protection becomes more and more urgent these years, stars are also dimming. What we hope is to arouse emotions in people and to encourage them to care for the stars. By the efforts of every person, no matter how little they are, we should together work for the stars to re-appear in Beijing's night sky. Don't leave our descendants a night sky with artificial luminous bodies only."

The event also drew the attention from many tourists. While taking photos of this gorgeous scenery, people also positively commented on this event, and most of them showed the wish of summoning more and more volunteers to join the team of environmental protection.

30 Years Vicissitude, Track Changes of the Stars

30 years ago, the stars in Beijing were clear and bright. The night sky with shining stars was once the inspiration for artists' creation and children's imagination.

20 years ago, the stars in Beijing twinkled like flashlights, recording every single step how Chinese people were constructing their young country.

10 years ago, the stars in Beijing sparkled together with the newly implemented neon lights, witnessing how the capital city of China was becoming a fashionable cosmopolis.

But now, the stars are disappearing. The artificial stars created by online game players and BUEU volunteers on 11th May have undoubtedly aroused the memories of the once shining night sky. Generations after generations, we can't let the starring view of the night sky become a dream of the past. Let us cross our fingers and make a wish, put our hands together and start to save the stars.
