Corning technology is helping to improve the air quality in China by reducing mobile emissions. Corning manufactures and develops advanced ceramic substrates and diesel particulate filters that help meet the country's demanding mobile emissions requirements. Corning invented an economical,

high-performance, cellular ceramic substrate in the early 1970s that is now the standard for catalytic converters worldwide. In 1978, Corning developed the cellular ceramic particulate filter to remove soot from diesel emissions. In 2001, Corning began shipping light-duty substrates to the automotive market from Corning Shanghai Company, Ltd. (CSCL) in Shanghai, China.

Corning's equity company, Cormetech, is also an enabler of clean energy in China. Cormetech is a leading producer of titania-based ceramic honeycomb catalysts for NOx emissions control. These catalysts are used in coal-fired power plants helping to reduce air pollution. Cormetech is owned by Corning and Mitsubishi.

Corning is also making a remarkable effort to develop renewable energy by investing in photovoltaic glass and leveraging its expertise in specialty glass, semiconductor technology and fiber optics (light management). There are significant green opportunities in China and Corning is working to address the increasing market demand for improved solar technologies that offer lightweight form factors and higher conversion efficiency at reduced cost.

Used in green buildings across China today, Corning telecommunications solutions using optical fiber offer significant environmental benefits when compared to copper, considering fiber's reduced power consumption that ultimately leads to reduced CO2 emissions. Corning's newly launched data center solutions allow for up to 35 percent faster deployment and improved overall airflow, reducing energy costs with respect to the size of the space allotted for the equipment. The solution products are packaged in up to 60 percent recycled material, and the packaging is 100 percent recyclable.

Eric S. Musser, chief executive officer of Corning Greater China said, "As the world leader in specialty glass and ceramics, Corning is proud to be a part of the China Greentech Initiative. Through sustained investment in innovation for more than 150 years, Corning has created key components that enable high-technology systems for emissions control, green buildings and cleaner energy. As we continue to build our presence in China, we are committed to leveraging our materials science and process engineering expertise to provide green solutions that can improve the quality of life for the people of China."

Thomas H. Lynch, strategy and business development director of Corning Greater China stated, "The China Greentech Initiative has come along at just the right time to provide a vehicle for dialogue on green technology solutions in China. CGTI has involved stakeholders from all sectors of industry, government, and NGOs that care about improving the environment while enabling the continued impressive economic growth of China. The CGTI forum is a great opportunity for Corning to introduce some of our green technologies in a way that is most helpful to China and we are pleased to be a part of it."
