SINGAPORE, May 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- ONE15 Marina Club, an ultimate lifestyle waterfront destination in Asia, was awarded the "Green Maritime Company of the Year" at the 11th edition of the Asia Boating Awards held on 1 May 2015. The award recognises the leisure marina businesses in Asia that have contributed to the protection of the environment.

Established by Asia-Pacific Boating and China Boating magazines in 2005, the Asia Boating Awards is an annual event that acknowledges the best of the maritime industry in Asia and internationally. It also serves as a benchmark for the industry in the Asia-Pacific region. This year, the Awards saw nearly 200 industry leaders and VIPs from all around the world as the event kick-started with a range of Snow Leopard cocktails, followed by a 5-course dinner with Torres wine pairings and the presentation of the prestigious trophies, made of Baccarat crystal.

"We are thrilled to have achieved such high recognition for our efforts to protect the environment," said Brian E. Werner, General Manager of ONE15 Marina Club, commenting on the award win. "This is a testament to ONE15's eco-friendly practices and initiatives, and we will continue to display exemplary environmental stewardship for future generations to enjoy a cleaner Earth."

Besides its recent win, ONE15 Marina Club was also the first marina in the region to achieve the internationally-recognised certification for Environment Management, the ISO 14001, in 2007. This standard ensures consumers that products and services offered by the Club have the lowest possible environmental impact and that they comply with all environmental laws, regulations and other requirements. For example, pontoons around the Club's marina are made from composite wood, a fully sustainable resource made from reclaimed wood and polymer, as opposed to timber.

The Club's Environmental Policy pledges to operate a clean and sustainable marina with minimal pollution and waste. To achieve this, the Club offers a waste pump-out system to ensure that waste materials from vessels are not discharged into the waters. In addition, strict regulations in the Club's byelaws prohibit boat-owners from activities that may disrupt the marine's ecosystem, such as fishing or depositing pollutants. Designated washing areas for yachts also limit the contact between harmful washing liquids or detergent and the marine life.

In conjunction with its commitment to environmentally-friendly practices, ONE15 Marina Club embarked on its own eco-initiative in 2008 -- Project Perna -- which involves the breeding of mussels, also known as Perna Viridis, under the marina pontoon. These mussels function as filter feeders, helping to remove pollutants from the waters and provide a source of food for the fishes within the marina.

Additionally, ONE15 Marina Club takes special efforts to preserve and calibrate the growth of the marina's eco-system. This can be seen in its World Ocean Day Celebrations in 2009 when the Club collaborated with the National University of Singapore's (NUS) Department of Biological Sciences in a coral project to re-establish corals in the marina. The project involves the installation of small coral fragments, also known as "nubbins," from healthy colonies to encourage the development of coral habitats.

Aside from keeping the marina pollutant-free with a thriving marine biosphere, the Club is also mindful about other aspects of conservation. For instance, the Club participates in the annual worldwide movement, Earth Hour, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF); in which it encouraged its hotel guests to switch off all non-essential lights for an hour.
